LA ESCUELA___ Launches New Programs on Ecological Rights and Activist Participation

This fall, the artist-run platform LA ESCUELA___ launches its second semester of creating spaces for learning in collaboration with artists, researchers, institutions, and communities, all working collectively in public spaces across the Americas.

With geographic decentralization as a premise, the program will unfold online and on-site through formative projects in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, and Ecuador. These projects — editorial and research programs designed as Classrooms — are intended to address contemporary perspectives and experiences of art as education that are driven by ecological, political, and cultural issues relevant to Latin America. Topics such as nature, food, and the spiritual will be addressed through corporal manifestations across the performing arts and street activism.

Around 60 collaborators from 12 countries will organize programs for LA ESCUELA___’s 2022—II Semester, including Catarina Duncan, Sara Garzón, Lia Rodrigues, Miguel Rubio, Gustavo Ciríaco, Jorgge Menna Barreto, Eloisa Brantes, Félix Suazo, María Jose Machado, Jessica Briceño-Cisneros, Benvenuto Chavajay, Agremiaçao LATIDOS, Andrés Pereira Paz, Daniela Medina Poch, Elizabeth Gallón Droste, and Ana Paula Santana. There is also a new international residency program for teaching artists that begins with José Luis Macas Paredes (Ecuador) as a fellow in Mexico.

Institutional allies for this semester include the Maestría en Artes Vivas of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and Plural Nodo Cultural (Colombia); Departamento de Artes del Movimiento of the Universidad Nacional de las Artes, El Asunto de lo Remoto performance program, and Fundación Andreani (Argentina); and Casa Orozco and the Secretaría de Cultura de Jalisco through the Escuela de Artes Jalisco (Mexico).

Jointly founded by artist and educator Miguel Braceli and the international nonprofit foundation Siemens Stiftung, LA ESCUELA___ draws upon the rich legacy of Latin American artists and educators, seeking to engage education with real-world contexts in order to learn from and act upon them. Classrooms are oriented toward the development of artistic initiatives with students in public spaces and the co-creation of Laboratories in translocal virtual meeting spaces. All programs are free and open to the public.
