The Parsons Fine Arts program at The New School is proud to announce An Asterism*, the 2022 MFA Fine Arts Thesis exhibition organized by Alison Burstein (Curator, The Kitchen). The show features new works by Austin Casebolt, carolina muñoz awad, Darian Stewart, Ghazi Sikander Mirza, Kris Peng Siyun, Lily Moebes, Lipika Bhargava, Mauve Martineau, Paula Martin Rivero, Rachel Yeoh, Rengu Zhang, Tianyi Sun, Ye Cheng, Zhiyi Zhang, and Zoë Fitzpatrick Rogers.
An Asterism* draws on the dual meaning of the word “asterism.” In astronomy, it describes a perceived pattern of stars and in typography, the symbol (⁂) marks a section break. The exhibition embraces a tension within all MFA thesis presentations, as these culminating events bring together artists from a graduate program to show their work as a unified cohort at a moment of transition, just before the group disbands and each student begins the next phase of their post-graduate career. Rather than attempting to cover over this incongruence, An Asterism* calls for reflection on the ways that connectivity and delineation are intertwined.
The public is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, May 19 from 6–8pm in the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center’s Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Gallery, 2 West 13th Street, and a closing event with artist talks and performances on Friday, May 27, 5–8pm. All visitors must be masked and present proof of being fully vaccinated and boosted to gain entry to the exhibition.
