Learn How to Make Your Own Artist’s Book

We all have stories to share — we just have to find the right shape in which to tell them. Bookmaker Debra Disman is convinced that the artist’s book is one of the most versatile mediums out there. “The form invites anyone and everyone to express themselves with whatever they have at hand,” she wrote over email. This Saturday, Disman is hosting “Bookmaking with Self-Compassion,” a free online workshop hosted by 18th Street Arts Center. The event is part of WE RISE, a Los Angeles County initiative timed for Mental Health Awareness Month.

In line with the program’s spirit, Disman will approach bookmaking as a means of healing. “Folds and pages are private areas that can hold feelings, experiences, dreams and wishes that might be painful to share or even acknowledge,” she said. Participants will learn how to make a flower fold book, in which the sheets of paper unfold like the petals of a blooming flower. 18th Street Arts Center is providing free materials for pickup, or you can plan at home in advance.

When: Saturday, May 15, 11am–12:30pm (PST)
Where: online
