New York Studio School’s full-time two-year MFA and three-year Certificate (In-Person and Virtual) programs offer the opportunity to develop one’s work and personal aesthetic philosophy through comprehensive studio classes, meaningful feedback from dedicated instructors, and independent experimentation within a community of makers. Rigorous engagement empowers participants to cultivate distinctive visual languages and to forge personal studio practices that will last a lifetime.
MFA Program
The NYSS MFA is designed to foster an awakened imagination, a dedicated work habit, and a direct ambition for artistic production. The 60-credit, two-year curriculum prioritizes a range of intensive studio classes in the first year, and shifts to focus on personal vision development during the second year of study. The MFA Critical Studies seminar explores a range of theoretical approaches to art-making and culminates in a written thesis paper and thesis exhibition. Each semester of study begins with a two-week Marathon, igniting new ideas and generating momentum for continued studio inquiry. Enrollment is limited to 15 MFA candidates per cohort each academic year.
Certificate Program
The NYSS Certificate is an exceptional opportunity to deepen one’s vocation as an artist, either in-person or in a virtual format. Each semester begins with the school’s signature two-week Marathon, followed by 12 weeks of coursework and independent studio work. This is bolstered by the Evening Lecture Series and weekly seminar, professional practice and technical workshops, one-on-one faculty guidance, group critiques, exhibition opportunities, sessions with visiting artists, and faculty-guided trips to the museums, galleries, and artist studios of New York City and beyond. Artists can begin in either the fall or spring semester and have the flexibility to participate in-person or virtually on a semester-by-semester basis. The curriculum immerses students in a deep studio practice, guided by supportive faculty direction, and bolstered by a wide range of classes rooted in perceptual study. The three-year program culminates in the Certificate Completion Exhibition.
