Washington University’s MFA in Visual Art Is for Renegade Makers and Thinkers

Applications are now open for the Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art (MFA-VA) at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. With the aim of instilling the agency and resiliency essential for this generation of artists, the MFA-VA program is an inclusive, close-knit community of renegade makers and thinkers. The curriculum professionally prepares students for a diversified approach to the field of contemporary art that nurtures sustained, lifelong engagement while recognizing multiple pathways and definitions for a career in the arts and culture. Students also have opportunities to engage with the city of St. Louis, Missouri, which serves as both an extension of the studio and a site of engagement for art and artists.

This interdisciplinary program offers students a site for rigorous inquiry, intellectual generosity, and professional preparedness. As part of a tier-one research institution, the Sam Fox School unites art, architecture, and design with its nationally renowned Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum to bring a multidisciplinary approach to contemporary issues and challenges.

Expansive facilities and studios serve as a think tank for intellectual and material experimentation across disciplines within the school and the university. There are numerous options to expand studies through the Office for Socially Engaged Practice and opportunities like the Berlin Sommerakadamie — which begins on-campus in the spring semester and extends into the summer for travel abroad, providing an understanding of how artists address history, communities, and social contexts in relation to the conceptual and practical dimensions of their work. Throughout the course of the program, students prepare work for several exhibitions, including a thesis exhibition at the Kemper Art Museum.

Applications are due January 10, 2024.
