Art on Paper Returns to New York City’s Pier 36 This Fall

For its ninth edition, Art on Paper introduces Artistic Director Nato Thompson, whose career includes a decade-long tenure overseeing projects at Creative Time and providing creative direction for Philadelphia Contemporary and MASS MoCA. Thompson brings an expanded lineup of special projects and performances that demonstrate paper’s versatility and expressive power.

This September, the fair will explore the diversity of paper-based art through education and community. Lower Eastside Girls Club x WORTHLESS STUDIOS will distribute free film and facilitate photograph classes onsite, and Shoestring Press will have a workshop with daily activations including demonstrations of various printmaking methods, silkscreen printing, and linocut. Center for Book Arts will present an Artist Book Fair featuring nonprofit institutions, including Dieu Donné and 10×10 Photobooks. This “fair within a fair” will showcase books that are outside the scope of a standard art book fair, with the aim of putting ideas, material, and form all on equal footing.

Public projects include a large-scale work by artist duo Striped Canary (Stephen B. Nguyen and Wade Kavanaugh), paper church fans by Tariqa Waters, and a mural by Amplifier, a nonprofit design lab that builds art and media experiments that intend to bring attention to some of the most important movements of our time. The fair’s Flat Files focus section also returns with a selection of fine art printmakers and publishers, including Lincoln Center Editions and Kingsland Editions.

Art on Paper will take place September 7–10, at Pier 36 in downtown Manhattan, New York.
