Powerhouse Arts Community Ceramics Studio Welcomes New Applicants for Membership

Unparalleled in its focus on health and safety and its wide range of equipment, the Community Ceramics Studio at Powerhouse Arts (PHA) provides shop members with robust facilities and resources, including a staff dedicated to providing guidance and support.

The Community Ceramics Studio piloted its program with reduced hours beginning in Spring 2023. On the heels of its May opening, PHA is proud to launch the program in full, welcoming new applicants for membership. New equipment enables wide ranging processes including wheel throwing, sculpture/hand-building, slip-casting, 3D printing, custom decal printing, electric, gas, and occasional raku firings (coming soon). The shop’s gas and electric kilns vary greatly in size and the facilities are conducive to both small- and large-scale work. Notably, the organization also recently welcomed the arrival of a hydraulic RAM press, a machine that is rarely accessible to the public and will allow fabricators to significantly speed up the production of work that can be made from a two part-mold. It will eventually be available to artists for rent by the day.

Located on the sixth floor of Powerhouse Arts’s one-of-a-kind, purpose-built facility on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, the calm, bright, and quiet space boasts floor-to-ceiling arched windows with a beautiful view of downtown Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. The organization prioritizes health and safety in its ergonomic workspaces by supplying fresh clean air, dust extraction, and equipment that can aid physically intensive processes. Most table heights and equipment are accessible to users with wheelchairs.

The studio — and PHA in general — welcomes a diverse group of artists working in a variety of traditions and techniques, providing space for artists to develop their personal practice while creating opportunities to engage in knowledge sharing and community building.
