See the world through the eyes of Nam June Paik, the father of video art and coiner of the term “electronic superhighway.”
American Masters – Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV traces Paik’s creative evolution, as Academy Award nominee Steven Yeun (Minari, The Walking Dead) reads from the visionary artist’s own writings. Stream the acclaimed documentary today on PBS.org and the PBS App.
Directed by Amanda Kim, the documentary charts Paik’s life from his childhood in Japan-occupied Korea and formative education in Germany to his ascent in the New York art scene and beyond. Paik is considered one of the most influential artists of Korean descent. His most notable works include “TV Buddha” (1974) and “Good Morning Mr. Orwell” (1984).
Inspired by the evolving relationship between humanity and technology, Paik saw a future in which “everybody will have his own TV channel.” With the advent of social media and the rise of platforms like YouTube and TikTok, his vision of the future looks startlingly like the present.
Now in its 37th season on PBS, American Masters presents Nam June Paik: Moon Is the Oldest TV in honor of AAPI Heritage Month. Setting the standard for documentary film profiles, American Masters illuminates the lives and creative journeys of those who have left an indelible impression on our cultural landscape — through compelling, unvarnished stories.
