With its focus on the art of the now, this artist preview of VOLTA New York provides a strong reflection of the changing world we live in, with galleries hailing from traditionally defined art market capitals and beyond.
SEIZAN Gallery (New York/Tokyo) presents Japanese artist Motohide Takami, whose work was impacted by the Great Earthquake of 2011. The disaster informed the recurring image that appears in their oil paintings — one of flames by the riverside. This refers to the Japanese expression, “fire on the other side of the river,” underscoring the human disinterest in tragic events that do not directly impact you.
Barcelona-based Out of Africa (OOA) Gallery champions work by contemporary African artists. Their presentation includes art that showcases African pride by Oluwole Omofemi, Matthew Eguavoen, Médéric Turay, and Moses Zibor.
CUT ART (Riga, Latvia) presents Korean artist Vlad Ogay’s “ready-mades”, inspired by his time studying in Russia. They are also showcasing work by Ukrainian artist Gamlet Zinkovsky, who previously represented Ukraine at the 53rd Venice Biennale and now collaborates with the project City X NFT. This venture aims to preserve art by Ukrainian avant-garde artists, whose fates are currently unknown due to the ongoing war.
Solo presentations at the 2023 edition include sculptures by Lithuanian artist Mindaugas Junčys at (AV17) Gallery’s booth, Dominican artist Manuel Mera at Catalysta Gallery, and Irish artist Paul Hughes with Stone Step Gallery.
