Celebrate Robert Motherwell’s Drawings With the Dedalus Foundation and the Menil Collection

“Drawing is perhaps the only medium as fast as the mind itself.”
— Robert Motherwell

American Abstract Expressionist Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) is renowned for his paintings and prints; he produced some of the most innovative and profound imagery of the 20th century, such as the Elegy to the Spanish Republic, Iberia, Open, and Summertime in Italy series. Motherwell also created a body of drawings in a wide variety of techniques and styles over the course of his long and impressive career, which are critical to understanding his artistic practice.

On Friday, November 18, at the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston, Texas, art historian Katy Rogers of the Dedalus Foundation will join the Menil Drawing Institute’s chief curator Edouard Kopp and the Menil Collection’s director of publishing Joseph N. Newland for a conversation about the making of Rogers’s brand new, landmark publication, Robert Motherwell Drawings: A Catalogue Raisonné.

The event is held in conjunction with the opening of the Menil exhibition, Robert Motherwell Drawing: As Fast as the Mind Itself. Copies of the catalogue raisonné and exhibition catalogue will be available for purchase at this event.
