Now on view through January 16, 2023, Endless Journey at SITE Santa Fe features 18 paintings and 13 works on paper spanning 1962 to 2022. This exhibition surveys over six decades of New Mexico-based artist Max Cole’s ongoing career, including many never-before-seen works. Her paintings invite viewers on a meditative journey through her lifelong investigation of rhythmic, repetitive lines and composition.

Written like music or poetry, Cole’s lines are records of movement, keepers of time. The slight variation in each handmade mark is intended to create a visual echo that vibrates across the canvas, generating a visceral and immersive experience for the viewer.

This exhibition includes works such as “Noble Nassau” (1981), a piece unique in its large scale and palette, spanning 13 1/2 feet. On loan from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, this is the first time the painting is on display in New Mexico.

Max Cole was born in Kansas in 1937 and grew up in the Southwest. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1961 from Fort Hays University in Hays, Kansas, and three years later received a master’s degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she was awarded a Fellowship for the Graduate Study of Painting. Since then, she has developed artistically in Los Angeles, New York, and Europe. She now resides and works in northern New Mexico.
