A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration Opens at the Mississippi Museum of Art

In A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration, 12 acclaimed Black artists trace their personal stories through the Great Migration and explore their family connections to the Southern United States. Co-organized by the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art, the exhibition will unveil newly commissioned works informed by research and conversations that examine themes of perseverance, self-determination, and self-reliance.

Participating artists include Akea Brionne, Mark Bradford, Zoë Charlton, Larry W. Cook, Torkwase Dyson, Theaster Gates, Allison Janae Hamilton, Leslie Hewitt, Steffani Jemison, Robert Pruitt, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, and Carrie Mae Weems.

The exhibition is co-curated by Ryan N. Dennis, Chief Curator and Artistic Director at the Mississippi Museum of Art, and Jessica Bell Brown, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and is accompanied by a two-volume publication.
