Portraits of Anthony Fauci and Ava DuVernay Will Hang in the Smithsonian

Seven Americans will receive the distinct honor of having their portraits included in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in Washington, DC, including filmmaker Ava DuVernay, US Chief Medical Advisor Anthony Fauci, and tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, the museum announced today.

“The Portrait of a Nation Award reminds us that history is living and the choices people make have an impact on the nation’s legacy,” Kim Sajet, director of the NPG, said in a statement.

Other 2022 Portrait of a Nation awardees include chef and humanitarian José Andrés, record producer Clive Davis, and children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman. Honorees will be invited to celebrate their awards at the biennial Portrait of a Nation Gala — which was postponed a year due to COVID-19 — and their portraits will hang in the “Recent Acquisitions” exhibition from November 10 this year through October 22, 2023.

The portraits will either be freshly commissioned or acquired and will become a part of the NPG’s permanent collection. Recent past honorees include designer Carolina Herrera, architect Maya Lin, filmmaker Spike Lee, and the musical group Earth, Wind & Fire.
