University at Albany Offers Tuition Waivers and Funding for MFA Students

The Department of Art and Art History at the University at Albany is accepting applications for its Fall 2022 MFA and MA programs in Studio Art. All students in the highly competitive two-year MFA program are offered Teaching or Graduate Assistantship funding and 50% tuition waivers.

Regular studio visits with faculty, peers, and visiting artists give students a range of contexts and viewpoints from which to consider their work. The objective of the program is to both broaden and deepen students’ understanding of contemporary art to better develop their studio practice. Contemporary art seminars complement studio classes and equip students with insights that allow them to operate with increasing criticality and self-awareness.

In this affordable, interdisciplinary program, students work across Painting and Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture and Installation, and Photography and Related Media, and are given 24-hour access to spacious private and semi-private studios, and well-equipped common work areas and production facilities. We are committed to providing an excellent education for every student in an environment that maintains the health, safety, and well-being of our entire campus community. As knowledge of the COVID-19 virus continues to evolve, so do our rigorous protocols, guided by public health experts and New York State.

The department’s distinguished faculty of artists and art historians work closely with students to develop their graduate portfolios and prepare them for professional practice. As a culminating experience, MFA students show their thesis work in the University Art Museum while MA students have their thesis show in the Boor Sculpture Studio, with public receptions for both.

The Visiting Artists and Lecturers program brings internationally acclaimed emerging and mid-to-late-career artists to campus for public presentations and individual studio visits with MFA students.

To be considered for early acceptance, please submit all your materials by January 15, 2022. Application deadline is February 15, 2022. Early acceptance will ensure that you are competing against a smaller applicant pool for a position in the MA or MFA studio art programs at UAlbany. If invited into our graduate program through early acceptance, you must accept prior to the opening of the general deadline of February 15, or you will be competing alongside the entire applicant pool.
