The MA Curatorial Practice program at the School of Visual Arts offers two years of intensive coursework and professional training for curators, with a focus on contemporary art. The courses are designed to present students with case studies taught by world-renowned curators and experts drawing from their own professional experience.
The case studies bring history and theory together with practical knowledge of curating specific media — such as film, video, performance, photography, and digital media — in institutional and non-institutional venues. Along with the case studies, students engage in-depth with coursework in transnational art history, exhibition history, writing for exhibitions, and hands-on studio art. The program provides numerous opportunities, including support funding, to produce exhibitions and other curatorial projects.
Students meet in weekly sessions over two years with more than 50 leading curators and artists from all over the world, who discuss their projects and practical problem-solving. The summer between the program’s two years is spent in internships at carefully selected museums and kunsthallen across Europe, East and West Asia, Latin America, and the US.
Based in the heart of New York City, the program is within walking distance of hundreds of art galleries and is close to some of the world’s greatest museums. Students work in museum collections and archives and attend workshops covering crucial tasks in curatorial work, including lighting design, exhibition design, grant writing, making presentations, as well as an introduction to conservation issues.
MA Curatorial Practice is now accepting applications for full-time and part-time students. The program seeks diversity of every kind and offers small merit-based scholarships.
