Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa has produced a wide range of archival documentaries at an incredibly fast clip over the past 15 years. Dredging up visual materials from decades’ worth of Soviet media, he probes what people at the time both were and were not shown, drawing out the contrast between official and alternative narratives. Now, the streaming platform MUBI has put together a tribute to these works. Back in the USSR: Sergei Loznitsa’s Archival Documentaries features four films recreating drastically different events in Soviet History.
Blockade (2006) assembles rare footage of the 900-day Axis siege of Leningrad during World War II, while The Event (2015) depicts the failed hardline communist coup in Moscow in 1991. The Trial (2018) follows the sham trial of a group of engineers and economists in 1930. Loznitsa’s latest, State Funeral (2019), brings together previously unseen images of Joseph Stalin’s extravagant 1953 funeral.
