How can a museum draw visitors to its exhibitions while also promoting public health amid a pandemic? The Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York, came up with an ingenious solution to this problem: Free admission for patrons with proof of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Through May 31, anyone with proof of vaccination can visit the Everson free of charge. Mask-wearing and social distancing remain mandatory. The museum also has designated hours for high-risk individuals (Friday and Saturday between 10am to noon).
“The Everson wants to do everything we can to promote public wellness and health,” wrote Elizabeth Dunbar, the museum’s director and CEO, in an email to Hyperallergic. “This is just our small way of saying thank you for getting out there and getting those shots in your arms so that we can all be together enjoying the things we love to do again.”
Current exhibitions at the Everson include Homecoming, a solo debut of Syracuse-born artist Jaleel Campbell, and Who What When Where, a group exhibition based on a namesake photographic series by the renowned Syracuse-based artist Carrie Mae Weems. Also on view is an exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Steffani Jemison and a survey of contemporary Japanese ceramics from the museum’s collection.
