The Cordillera of Dreams (2019)
With this film, Patricio Guzmán, Chile’s foremost documentary filmmaker, closes out a trilogy relating the country’s political history to its notable natural features (the desert in 2011’s Nostalgia for the Light, the ocean in 2015’s The Pearl Button, the mountains here). He interviews a variety of artists and activists to consider the lasting legacy of the 1973 military coup and subsequent Allende regime.

The Early Works of Cheryl Dunye (1994)
In the ’90s, Cheryl Dunye broke ground for queer Black women filmmakers, particularly with The Watermelon Woman (1996). This collection brings together Dunye’s early short films, which showcase all the qualities which would come to define her work: an easy blending of documentary and fiction, strong collaborations with other women, and an acute attention to how historical contexts inform personal experience.
The Owl’s Legacy (1989)
This 13-episode look at the history of Greece and its influence on the rest of the West is anything but a traditional educational television doc. Influential film essayist Chris Marker blends expert testimony, symposiums he himself arranges, and copious archival materials to look at how different Greek concepts have resonated throughout history. Inaccessible for nearly 30 years after its initial airing, the series was restored in 2018.
