Brodsky Center at PAFA’s Spring Sale Features Limited Editions by Contemporary Artists

Printmaking has a rich history in America and at America’s oldest art school, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). PAFA is also home to the Brodsky Center, a collaborative paper and printmaking center devoted to creating new work. The Brodsky Center is a part of the College at PAFA, expanding its printmaking curriculum and providing internship and professional opportunities for students to learn about publishing editions, marketing, and selling artists’ prints.

On March 31 and April 1, budding and seasoned collectors will have a chance to purchase Brodsky Center limited editions by contemporary artists Kiki Smith, Barkley L. Hendricks, Frank Bowling, Elizabeth Catlett, William Kentridge, Pat Steir, Richard Tuttle, and many more at the Spring Sale, which features artists whose work crosses the boundaries of gender, race, politics, and class.

Founder Judith K. Brodsky established the Brodsky Center “to provide access to printmaking studios and professional master printers for women artists, artists of color and artists from populations that had little if any access to professional printmaking facilities.” Since its founding, more than 350 artists have completed editions. They represent a diverse range of emerging and established artists, including PAFA alumni Barkley L. Hendricks and Jonathan Lyndon Chase as well as artists in PAFA’s collection, such as Melvin Edwards, Joan Semmel, and Richard Tuttle.

Many Brodsky Center Artists-in-Residence are not printmakers but work very closely with an onsite master printmaker as a collaborator. The Brodsky Center at PAFA has focused on publishing smaller editions than in past years, so many of the most recent editions only include 10 numbered impressions. Artworks from the Brodsky Center are for sale and support the Center’s mission. Explore the Brodsky Center at PAFA’s unique fine-arts editions, works on paper, and artists’ books by highly sought-after contemporary artists in the Spring Sale and receive a 15% discount.

Shop the Brodsky Center at PAFA’s collection in this two-day online sale, with select works up to 15% off. Contact lwerrell@pafa.org for more information.
